Let's first explain what halitosis is. Halitosis is the technical name for bad breath. According to the ADA, chronic bad breath effects millions of people each year. It can also be caused by sinus problems, xerostomia ( dry mouth ), and smoking. Additional sources include dieting, smoking, age, stress, snoring, and hormonal changes. Cancer patients may notice an increase of bad breath due to dry mouth associated with taking radiation therapy. Some instances may be caused by compounds originating from the stomach but are considered rare.

Why is saliva so important in fighting bad breath?

Saliva is like your mouth's shower. It helps to continually wash away the bacteria and particles that promote bad breath. If you've ever notice that your breath smells the worst in the morning (hence the term morning breath) it is caused by the fact that your mouth normally dries out at night letting the bacteria to flourish and grow.
